Because partnerships are not subject to corporation tax, the SA800 does not calculate tax owed by the company. Instead, each partner must fill out an SA100 tax return to record the amount of tax that is due based on their share of the profits and any other relevant income.
Partnership TAX RETURN

Understanding your SA800 partership tax obligations

The SA800 is the partnership tax return required by Limited Liability Partnerships as a record of an LLP company’s income and expenses for the previous accounting period. While it is not used to calculate the amount of tax due, the SA800 serves as an official declaration of company profits and losses, and as a point of reference for individual partners when working out their tax liability.

Although SA stands for Self-Assessment, the SA800 applies to the partnership as a whole, referred to as a partnership self-assessment. Also note that the SA800 form is completed by 1 nominated partner, who is responsible for registeringthe partnership for self-assessment and submitting partnership tax returns by the due date.

FAQ

Your SA800 questions answered

The SA800 is completed by one nominated partner on behalf of the whole partnership. This is why it's referred to as a "partnership self-assessment" — even though SA stands for Self-Assessment, the return covers the partnership as a whole rather than an individual.
No. Partnerships aren't subject to corporation tax, so the SA800 doesn't calculate tax due. Each individual partner must file their own SA100 tax return, working out the tax owed on their share of the partnership's profits along with any other relevant income.
The SA800 must reach HMRC by 31 October if filing by paper, or 31 January if filing online.
Yes. The partnership needs its own UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference), and the nominated partner is responsible for registering it for self-assessment via a government gateway account before returns can be filed.
If the partnership has income from more than one trade or profession, or additional income types, the nominated partner may need to complete supplementary pages alongside the main SA800:
  • SA801 - UK property income
  • SA802 - Partnership foreign income
  • SA803 - Partnership disposal of chargeable gains
  • SA804 - Partnership savings, investments, and other income
If the partnership has multiple income streams, a 'full' version of the SA800 is available on the platform, covering up to 6 partners.
